Herons host Yellowjackets for midweek clash

The William Smith Volleyball team will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 1, when it welcomes Rochester for a non-conference contest at 6 p.m. in Bristol Gymnasium.  

Fans who can't make it to Bristol Gymnasium on Wednesday can follow all the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. 

Additionally, sophomore Arielle Newsome was named to the Liberty League weekly honor roll after standout weekend for the Herons. Newsome combined for 14 kills on zero errors, hitting .667 in back-to-back sweeps last weekend. She averaged 2.33 kills per set, 0.33 blocks per set and 2.58 points per set to land on the weekly honor roll. 

ABOUT THE HERONS: 

  • William Smith enters the match with a 12-1 record after opening conference play with sweeps against St. Lawrence and Clarkson last weekend. The Herons are receiving 82 votes in this week's AVCA national poll 

  •  Senior Malya Sayre currently leads the nation in kills per set (5.07) and points per set (6.16). After four aces against the Saints, she became the first Heron in program history to surpass the 150-career ace mark. 

  •  Sophomore Emily Fulton is currently ranked 10th in the liberty league in kills per set (2.84) and seventh in points per set (3.58). She also ranks fourth in the conference in service aces per set (0.68). 

  •  William Smith ranks second in the country in team hitting percentage (.275) and has five players in the top 10 of the conference. Newsome leads the Liberty League (.399), while Emily Fulton ranks fifth (.307). Senior Hope Von Dohlen ranks seventh (.296) in the conference while senior Jaylynn McCarthy ranks eighth (.292) and Sayre ranks 10th (.270).  

  • Sophomore setter Delainy Williams leads the Liberty League and is fourth in the nation for assists per set (10.88). She leads the Heron squad that ranks third in the nation in assists per set as a team (12.83). 

  • The Herons have been a threat at the net this season and have combined for a league leading 2.10 blocks per set as a team. Newsome leads the team and is ranked third in the conference in blocks per set (0.85), while Von Dohlen ranks fourth (0.80). McCarthy is ranked seventh in the conference in blocks per set (0.71). 

  • Defensively, William Smith is led by sophomore libero Kali Vanderhoof who ranks fifth in the conference in digs per set (3.80).  

  • The Herons lead the Liberty League in points per set (18.61), hitting percentage (.283), assists per set (12.73), kills per set (13.54), blocks per set (2.10), and service aces per set (2.98). The Herons lead the nation in hitting percentage and rank fifth in service aces per set (12.73).  

ABOUT THE YELLOWJACKETS:  

  •  Rochester enters the match 3-11 after losses to NYU, University of Chicago, and Washington University in St. Louis last weekend.  

  •  Rylee Bergeron leads the Yellowjackets offensively, averaging 3.12 kills per set. Sancia Williams adds 1.96 kills per set for Rochester. 

  • Juliette Azzariti averages a team-leading 4.68 assists per set, while McKenzie McDonald adds 3.20. 

  • Defensively, Lydia Weeks leads the Yellowjackets averaging 4.12 digs per set, while Paige Stephenson leads the blocking with 16 blocks on the season.  

  • Last season on Nov. 11, 2024, Rochester defeated William Smith in a five-set thriller. Sayre led the way with 17 kills in the loss.
