Hobart tops RIT for Thompson’s 100th career win

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team completed a Liberty League weekend sweep with an 81-74 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology this afternoon, giving Statesmen Head Coach Stefan Thompson '13 his 100th career coaching win. Hobart earned its 10th win of the season with a gritty second half comeback after trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half.
 
The Statesmen (10-2, 4-1 LL) by the junior tandem of Alex Moesch and Dorian Paki. Moesch matched his career-high with a team-high 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and a perfect 9-for-9 effort at the free throw line. He also logged four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Paki contributed a career-high 21 points, including four two-handed dunks, and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore Monty Nedd chipped in nine points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Classmate Allen Mordi led the Statesmen to a 43-35 advantage on the glass with a team-high nine rebounds.
 
RIT (4-8, 1-4) put three players in double figures led by graduate student Josiah Turner's game-high 27 points, which included five 3-pointers. Sophomore Mushin Muhammad just missed a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior Zac Ditzel scored 10 points.
 
GAME RECAP
First Half – RIT 42, Hobart 36
  • Hobart led 16-15 midway through the opening stanza, but the Tigers went on a 13-2 run to seize a 28-18 lead with under seven minutes to go.
  • Turner led the charge with three buckets, including one from distance.
  • The Statesmen closed the gap to just four by halftime, ending the half on a 10-4 run. Nedd contributed six points to the late surge.
  • Turner led all scorers with 16 points at the break, while Paki led Hobart with 11.
 
Second Half – Hobart 81, RIT 74
  • Ditzel made the opening basket of the second half, but the Statesmen responded with 10 straight points to reclaim the lead.
  • Senior Gabriel Bergeron opened the run with a 3-pointer, Moesch followed with an old fashion 3-point play and Paki threw down one of his dunks. Bergeron completed the 10-point burst with two makes at the charity stripe.
  • RIT briefly retook the lead Brody Brown's 3-pointer with 16 minutes remaining.
  • Hobart seized control for good by outscoring the Tigers 18-4 over the next nine minutes, opening up a 66-53 lead.
  • Moesch, Paki and sophomore Justin Price accounted for all of the Statesmen scoring during that run. Moesch netted seven points, Paki six and Price notched five of his eight overall points.
  • RIT fought to the last, getting within five with two minutes left, but did not get any closer.
 
KEY STATS
  • Hobart made 23-of-25 free throws for 92%. That ranks 14th on the program's single season list for highest free throw percentage. It's the highest free throw percentage by the Statesmen since Feb. 9, 2024 (.933, 14-15 at Skidmore).
  • The Statesmen made seven more free throws than the Tigers attempted.
  • Hobart was plus-2 in turnover margin, but enjoyed a 15-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

  • The Statesmen will begin a three-game road trip at Ithaca (3-9, 2-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
