Late push carries Knights over Herons

POTSDAM, N.Y.—William Smith junior Amelia McCulley scored a team-high 18 points, but a late push by Clarkson carried the host Knights to a 66-57 Liberty League win tonight.
 
McCulley was 7-of-12 shooting, sinking all three of her 3-point attempts. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, blocked a game-high three shots and added two steals. Senior Carly Scott chipped in nine points, all from beyond the 3-point arc.
 
Clarkson got a pair of 19-point performances from Fallon Griffin and Addie Kea. Griffin posted a double-double, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Emma Chambers also pulled down 11 boards for the Knights.
 
GAME RECAP
First Quarter: William Smith 15, Clarkson 8
  • The Herons trailed 8-4 with under three minutes left in the opening frame, but the Herons closed the frame on an 11-0 run.
  • Scott bookended the run with 3-pointers, while McCulley accounted for the other five points.
 
Second Quarter: Clarkson 30, William Smith 28
  • The Knights opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run that pushed them back into the lead.
  • William Smith briefly reclaimed the upper hand with six straight points. McCulley's 3-pointer gave the visitors at 23-20 edge.
  • Clarkson went into the break with a two-point lead by outscoring William Smith 10-5 over the final four minutes.
  • McCulley led all scorers with 10 points at the half.
 
Third Quarter: William Smith 43, Clarkson 43
  • Clarkson made the first basket of the second half to take the largest lead for either team in the third quarter, 32-28.
  • The shooting for both teams cooled off after the break. William Smith shot 33.3%, while Clarkson shot 27.8%.
 
Fourth Quarter: Clarkson 66, William Smith 57
  • Clarkson snapped out of its shooting funk first, knocking down 63.6% of its shots in the final 10 minutes.
  • The Knights seized control of the game with a 10-2 run that turned a one-point edge into a nine-point advantage.
  • Scott's 3-pointer with 36 seconds left got the Herons within five, but Clarkson made 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to close out the win.
