Elmira clips William Smith 3-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team was edged by Elmira, which is receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll, 3-1 in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this evening.
 
Senior Kelly Howe scored for the Herons. Junior Mia Wiwicki played 59 minutes in goal. She made 34 saves.
 
Anna Lugge scored a pair of goals to lead the way for the Soaring Eagles. Olivia Last started in goal and made 22 saves as she earned the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Soaring Eagles finished the game with a 37-23 edge in shots on goal.
  • William Smith was 1-for-4 on the power play and Elmira was 0-for-2 with the extra skater.
 
GAME SUMMARY
  • Elmira finished the first period with a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Soaring Eagles also hit two goal posts.  
  • Iwicki stood tall in the frame as Elmira peppered the William Smith goalie with shots.
  • The Herons had a 12-10 edge in shots on goal in the middle stanza, but Elmira scored the only goal two minutes into the frame.
  • Lugge picked up her own rebound on the left goal post and stuffed her eighth goal of the season past Iwicki. Annie Audet and Mo McBride had assists on the goal.
  • William Smith tied the game at the 6:04 mark of the third period. Howe collected a loose puck in the slot and tucked the shot around Last's left leg. It was her fourth goal of the season. Caeley McCormick and Tara Valas had assists on the goal.
  • Elmira regained the lead just over a minute later. Maura O'Keeffe broke into the offensive end all alone and wristed a shot over the goalie's glove. Piper Andrews set up the play, causing a turnover in the defensive end.
  • Lugge added an insurance goal at the 12:09 mark of the third period. She fought off a back check and slipped a shot into the back of the net. Her ninth goal of the season was assisted by MK Boyle and Bri Conger.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith and Elmira will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 17, when they make the 49-mile trip down Route 14 to the Murray Athletic Center. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
