Herons host Cortland, Morrisville this weekend

The William Smith ice hockey team is set to host Cortland and Morrisville at The Cooler this weekend, Jan. 23-24, for a pair of SUNYAC games. The Herons will face the Red Dragons on Friday at 7 p.m. Puck drop against the Mustangs is set for Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
William Smith enters this weekend with a 7-8-0 overall record. The Herons are 3-1-0 in SUNYAC play and will play their final 10 games of the regular season against SUNYAC foes.
 
Cortland is 7-5-2 with a 1-2-1 record in conference play. The Red Dragons have been idle since sweeping Manhattanville Jan. 9-10.
 
Morrisville is 3-12-0 and 1-3-0 in the SUNYAC. The Mustangs are looking to bounce back from a 4-1 loss to Williams on Jan. 13.
 
ABOUT THE HERONS
  • William Smith is currently second in the league standings with six points.
  • Sophomore Bella Hacker leads the Herons' offense with nine points on five goals and four assists.
  • Senior Kelly Howe (4g, 3a), junior Laine Heiser (3g, 4a) and first-year Finley Crosby (3-4) each have seven points.
  • Hacker, Crosby, Heiser and junior Tara Valas share the lead in assists with four.
  • Junior Mia Iwicki has played the majority of minutes in goal. She is 5-6-0 with a 2.72 GAA, a .929 save percentage and two shutouts.
 
ABOUT THE RED DRAGONS
  • Cortland is fourth in the league standings with three points.
  • Katie Mahoney leads the team with 12 points on five goals and seven assists.
  • Kira Cook has seven goals on the season.
  • Mahoney and Ainsley Delacourt share the lead in assists with seven each.
  • Elline Gillodes has played the majority of minutes in goal. She is 7-5-2 with a 1.85 GAA, a .925 save percentage and three shutouts.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • This will be the 11th meeting between the Herons and the Red Dragons.
  • Cortland leads the series 5-4-1, but in Geneva, William Smith leads 3-2-0.
  •  This will be the first meeting between the two teams since Jan. 14, 2020, a 4-2 Cortland win in Cortland.
 
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
  • Morrisville is tied for seventh in the conference standings with two points.
  • Zoe Leas leads the team with nine points on three goals and six assists.
  • Scarlett Smith follows with five goals and two assists.
  • Sydney Cranham has played the majority of minutes in goal. She is 2-6-0 with a 2.63 GAA, a .928 save percentage and one shutout.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • This will be the sixth matchup between William Smith and Morrisville.
  • The Herons lead the series 3-1-1 and won the lone contest at The Cooler 6-2 back in 2018.
