Herons fall in conference clash to Garnet Chargers 77-45

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Lobozzo sisters led the William Smith basketball team as it dropped a Liberty League matchup to Union 77-45 this afternoon in Bristol Gym.
 
Junior guard Giana Lobozzo led the Herons with 12 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block, while junior Ava Lobozzo chipped in 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals in the loss. Senior McKenzie Mandyck added eight points, two rebounds and one steal for William Smith, while sophomore Jojo Sulmasy recorded five points, four rebounds and two steals.
 
Union was led by Olivia Cunningham's 19 points and 14 rebounds. She added three assists and one block in the win. Kate Peek and Morgan Schultz added 12 points each in the win and combined for three rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.

HERON STAT LEADERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • William Smith scored the first four points of the game before Union responded with a 12-0 scoring run to grab the early momentum. The Garnet Chargers shot 35% from the floor and held the Herons to just 20% as they shot out to a 15-8 lead after one quarter.
  • Union's offense came to life in the second quarter as it shot 56% from the floor through 10 minutes. The Garnet Chargers forced four Heron turnovers in the second quarter and found crucial points off the turnovers to extend their lead to as much as 21 points in the second. Union would head into halftime up 42-21.
  • The Herons tried to fight back in the second half, but Union continued to produce an efficient offense, shooting 60% from the floor in the third quarter. The Garnet Chargers continued to find crucial points from their bench as they closed out the third on top 68-36.
  • William Smith locked down defensively in the final quarter and forced nine Union turnovers in the final 10 minutes. The Herons were big on the boards, grabbing eight offensive rebounds and were led by sophomore Bridget McCleary. William Smith tried to chip away at Union's lead, but the Garnet Chargers used the clock to their advantage and closed out the conference clash on top 77-45.
