Herons open conference play against RPI, Vassar this weekend

First 100 fans receive Free T-Shirt on Sunday

The William Smith field hockey team will be back in action this weekend as it opens Liberty League play. The Herons will travel to Troy, New York, Friday, Oct. 2, to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4 p.m. William Smith will then return to McCooey Field on Sunday, Oct. 4 to host Vassar at noon.

Free William Smith Homecoming T-shirts will be handed out to the first 100 fans at Sunday's game as a part of Homecoming and Family Weekend. Field hockey fans are encouraged to participate in a "Green Out" for the match. Shirts will be distributed at the gates beginning 30 minutes before the start of the game.

  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 4-6 record after a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 11 Hamilton on Tuesday. The Herons battled back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime and forced the contest into overtime, but the Continentals scored the game winner on a penalty stroke in the 68th minute.
  • Junior Eliza Freeland and first-year Abigail Mantione lead William Smith with 10 points on five goals each. Junior Caroline Kogut follows with nine points on three goals and three assists while senior Leah Griffith has recorded a team-leading five assists.
  • Kogut also leads the team with three defensive saves.
  • Sophomore Olivia Terranova has played the majority of minutes in goal for the Herons this season. She is 4-4 with a 2.09 GAA and a .742 save percentage. First-year Ryan Marsh adds an 0-2 record on the season with a 0.73 GAA and a .778 save percentage.
ABOUT THE ENGINEERS
  • RPI enters the weekend with a 6-2 record overall and is coming off a 2-0 win over DeSales on Saturday.
  • Sophia Brown leads the team with 22 points on 11 goals, while Emily Dubord follows with nine points on three goals and three assists.
  • Ria Patel has tallied a team-leading four assists for the Engineers.
  • Megan Rice has played the majority of minutes in goal. She is 5-1 with a 1.75 GAA and a .550 save percentage.
SERIES SNAPSHOT
  • Friday will be the 37th meeting between the Herons and the Engineers. William Smith leads the series 30-6 including a 12-4 record on the road.
  • The Herons have won the last four meetings with the Engineers, including a 3-2 decision in Geneva last season.

  • Vassar enters the weekend with a 5-3 record after a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Christopher Newport on Friday. The Brewers will take Rochester on Friday before traveling to Geneva on Sunday.
