POTSDAM, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team defeated Clarkson 1-0 in a Liberty League contest at Hantz Field this afternoon. With their third straight win, the Herons are now 7-3-0 on the season and 3-0-0 in conference play.

Kristin Middaugh scored for the Herons. Senior
Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal as she earned the shutout.
Kenzie Roth played all 90 minutes in goal for Clarkson (4-4-1, 1-2-1). She made three saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- William Smith finished the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots.
- The Golden Knights had three corner kicks and the Herons had one.
MATCH MOMENTS
- The Herons controlled the game right from the opening whistle. In the seventh minute, Middaugh had a shot sail just over the crossbar.
- Four minutes later, Middaugh had another chance smothered by the Clarkson goalie.
- Junior Grace Metzler nearly broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, but her shot rang off the crossbar.
- The second half was much like the first, with William Smith applying pressure right from the first whistle.
- Seniors Izzy Thors and Miranda DeMura had shots blocked by defenders.
- In the 56th minute, Middaugh broke through, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season. She collected a pass from Metzler and buried a shot past Roth.
- One minute later, Brynn Schneider had an attempt smothered by Roth.
- Gabrielle Cyganik had one of Clarkson's better chances in the closing stages of the second half, but her shot sailed wide left.
ROAD WARRIORS
- Today's game was the final game of a six-game road trip for the Herons. William Smith went 4-2-0 on the trip.

"It's always tough to travel to the north country, so we are proud of the team for the adjustments they made tactically and with our mentality in the second half," Head Coach
Laura Burnett-Kurie '08 said. "We created half a dozen great looks and locked them in their defensive half for most of the game. Overall, it was a good result. To end our long road trip with a win and shutout is a good feeling."

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they return to Cozzens Field for the first time since Sept. 16 to take on RIT. The key Liberty League contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. William Smith will play five of its final six games at home.
