#2 Statesmen blank Soaring Eagles 2-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The second-ranked Hobart hockey team opened the 2026-27 season with a 2-0 win over Elmira in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this evening.  The Statesmen have won five straight home openers and nine of their last 10.

Junior Tamas Toth and senior Conor Lally had Hobart's goals. Junior Connor Shibley started in goal and stopped all 15 shots he faced as he earned the second shutout of his career.

Kirill Madiev played all 60 minutes in goal for Elmira. He made 37 saves.

STREAKING
  • With tonight's victory, Hobart won its collegiate hockey record 70th straight home game.

  • The Statesmen finished the game with a 39-15 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • Hobart opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game. Toth snapped a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle that snuck past Madiev. Junior Christian Kocsis and Josh Doolan were awarded assists on the goal.
  • Lally sealed the game at the 16:40 mark of the third period. He collected a pass from Adam Mendelson and wristed a shot past the Elmira goalie. Senior Easton Ryan also had an assist on the goal.

SCORING CHANCES
  • Just past the 11-minute mark of the first period, first-year Frantisek Albrecht nearly scored his first collegiate goal, but he ripped a shot from the high slot just over the crossbar.
  • Brook MacDonald had one of the better chances for Elmira early in the second period, but Shibley made a pad save on the shot from the low slot. Lucas Stevenson had a chance on the rebound, but Shibley again kept the puck out of the net.
  • Twenty-one seconds into the third period, Chris Battaini fired a shot off the crossbar.
  • Shibley's biggest save of the night came just before Lally's goal. Jack Treacy one-timed a shot from directly in front of the cage that Shibley stuck his leg out to stop at the last second.

COACH'S CORNER
"It wasn't a perfect game, but a lot of positives, starting with a shutout. It's always good to win at home, and I'll steal the quote I just got from a good friend. You gotta win the first one to win them all." The Thomas B. Poole '61 and Family Head Coach of Hobart Hockey Mark Taylor said.

UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 31, when it makes the 50-mile trip down Seneca Lake to the Murray Athletic Center. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
