#12 Statesmen, Bombers battle to 1-1 draw

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 12th-ranked Hobart soccer team and Ithaca battled to a 1-1 draw in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon.
 
Sophomore Gabe Smith scored the goal for the Statesmen. Junior Jake Hans played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves.
 
Edin Estrada scored for the Bombers. Brayden Milbrandt went the distance in goal for Ithaca and made four saves. 
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart is now 9-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Liberty League play.
  • The Bombers are now 7-1-5 with a 0-0-3 record in conference games.
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ithaca finished the game with a 23-16 advantage in shots, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Bombers had five corner kicks in the game and the Statesmen had three.
 
FIRST HALF
  • Ithaca had the game's first shot 52 seconds in the game. Cameron Wooten broke into the 18-yard box and fired a shot on goal. Hans, charging out of goal, stopped the shot with his left foot.
  • Colin Adams followed that up with a shot in the fifth minute that was stopped by Hans.
  • Hobart's first dangerous chance of the game came in the 28th minute. Junior Will Slayton had a shot turned aside by a diving Milbrandt.
  • In the 34th minute, Smith fired a shot just over the crossbar.
  • Ithaca had one last chance in the closing seconds of the first half, but Aidan Board's shot was blocked and Edin Estrada had an attempt deflected over the crossbar.
 
SECOND HALF
  • The Bombers carried their momentum out of the halftime break and immediately jumped into the offensive half of the field. Liam Breslin had a pair of shots blocked by Hobart defensemen in the 46th minute.
  • In the 50th minute, senior La Zai Outerbridge stole the ball from a defender, but had his shot stopped by Milbrandt.
  • In the 64th minute, Danny Spataro drew a penalty kick. He stepped up and chipped his shot just over the crossbar.
  • Ithaca broke the deadlock four minutes later. Cameron Wooten nearly scored, but Hans punched it over the bar. On the ensuing corner kick, Edin Estrada bent a shot out of the left corner and into the upper right corner of the cage.
  • In the 72nd minute, Gabe Smith had a shot blocked. He picked up his own rebound and fired a shot past the goaltender, but it was swiped off the line by an Ithaca defender.
  • Juniors Griffin Coutts and Brady Leitner traded chances in the 78th minute, but Milbrandt stopped both shots.
  • The Statesmen drew level in the 82nd minute. Smith played a give-and-go with Slayton in the midfield, dribbled the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and buried a left-footed shot into the right corner of the cage. Hans also had an assist on Smith's third goal of the season after starting the play with a clearing pass.
  • Hobart nearly scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute, but Inigo Llosa just missed the left goalpost with a shot.
  • With 13 seconds remaining in regulation, Hans made a diving stop on a shot from Ithaca's top scorer, Jack Carney, to preserve the tie.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when it heads to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore. The Liberty League contest is set to begin at 2 p.m.
