Herons tripped up in regular season finale

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team was edged by Oswego 2-1 in a SUNYAC contest at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena this evening. With the loss, the Herons finish the regular season with an 11-14-0 overall record and a 7-7-0 mark in conference play.
 
Sophomore Rowan Kennedy scored the goal for the Herons. Junior Mia Iwicki played just under 59 minutes in goal and made 36 saves.
 
Liliana Ficaro and Leah Coley scored the goals for the Lakers (14-9-2, 8-4-2). Mia Devivo played all 60 minutes in goal and made 23 saves.

SUNYAC SEEDINGS
  • With the loss, William Smith finished the season with 16 points, fourth in conference standings and will host Canton on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the first round of the conference tournament.
  • Oswego jumped into a tie for second with Cortland and will be the No. 2 seed with the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Lakers earned a first-round bye and will play the highest remaining seed on Saturday, Feb. 28.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Oswego finished the game with a 38-24 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Lakers opened the scoring at the 5:46 mark of the first period. Ficaro picked up her own rebound in the low slot and chipped a shot past Iwicki. Her third goal of the season was assisted by Shaye Jasiel and Kayla Doerre.
  • Just under two minutes later, Coley notched her fifth goal of the year, snapping a shot through traffic past Iwicki. Her fifth goal of the season was assisted by Brittany Iversen.
  • William Smith got one goal back 39 seconds later. Kennedy intercepted a clearing pass and slipped a shot past Devivo for her fifth goal of the season. It was an unassisted goal.
  • The Herons had their chances to tie the game but could not sneak a second shot past the Oswego goalie.
