ITHACA, N.Y.—The No. 3 Cornell lacrosse team used a big second quarter on the way to a 19-8 non-conference win over Hobart at Schoellkopf Field this evening.
The Statesmen fell to 1-3, while the defending national champion Big Red improved to 3-0.
Cornell led 5-2 after 15 minutes of play and broke the game wide open with a 7-1 second quarter.
Hobart first-year
Gordon Bennett produced his first collegiate hat trick to pace the offense, while first-year defenseman
Colman Craft registered a game-high five caused turnovers. Junior
Tye Steenhuis added two goals. Seniors
David Peterkin and
Connor DiTomasso each notched a goal and an assist.
Michael Johnson and
Brady Smith each played 30 minutes in goal and made four saves apiece.
The Big Red were led by Willem Firth's four goals and four assists. Four other Cornell players had three points each. Goalie Matthew Tully played almost 56 minutes in goal, making seven saves. The Big Red controlled the X, winning 21-of-31 faceoffs. Jack Cascadden was 12-of-18 with six ground balls.
Cornell outshot Hobart 44-27 and had a 36-21 edge in ground balls. The Statesmen committed six fewer turnovers than the Big Red (36-21), limiting the home team to 20-of-27 clearing. Hobart was 19-of-21 clearing.
The Statesmen will return home to host Robert Morris (3-3) on Saturday, March 28. The opening faceoff at Urick Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
