#13 Cardinals down Herons in SUNYAC Semifinals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The fourth-seeded William Smith hockey team was defeated by top-seeded and 13th-ranked Plattsburgh 7-0 in a SUNYAC semifinal game at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena this afternoon.  The Herons conclude their season with a 12-15-0 record.
 
Junior Mia Iwicki started in goal and stopped 16 shots in just over 31 minutes. First-year Julia Echavarria played the final 29 minutes in goal and made 18 saves.
 
Emily Kasprzak (1g, 2a) and Sydnee Francis (1g, 2a) led the way for the Cardinals with three points each. Four other Plattsburgh players finished with multi-point games. Maddy Stetson got the start and stopped all 13 shots she faced as she earned the shutout. Plattsburgh improved to 19-6-1 on the season and will host the SUNYAC Championship game next Saturday.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Plattsburgh finished the game with a 41-13 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Cardinals were 1-for-2 on the power play and William Smith was 0-for-4 with the extra skater.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • William Smith had their first chance of the game at the 2:16 mark of the first period. Senior Kelly Howe nearly beat Stetson with a one-timer, but the Plattsburgh goalie stuck out her pad and made a highlight reel save to keep the game 0-0 at the time.
  • Plattsburgh opened the scoring just over five minutes into the opening frame. Emily Kasprzak ripped a shot from the left faceoff circle off and past Iwicki. Her seventh goal of the season was assisted by Taya Balfour and Zoe Puci.
  • Francis extended the lead to 2-0 -with a power-play goal at the 16:23 mark of the first period. Kasprzak and Maeghan Forsyth had the helpers on the goal.
  • The Cardinals scored three times in the second period to put the game out of reach.
  • Bailey MacKellar started the scoring 81 seconds into the stanza. Her 13th goal of the season was assisted by Kasprzak Forsyth.
  • Piper Smith gave Plattsburgh a 4-0 lead just before the midwaypoint of regulation. Riley Keller had the assist on the goal.
  • Three minutes later, Kate Conlon tacked on her sixth goal of the season. Brooke Terry and Sydnee Francis had assists on the goal.
  • Adriana Urban and Conlon had the goals in the third period. Urban's goal was her first of the season and Conlon's was her second of the game and seventh of the year.  
 
SENIOR SALUTE
  • The William Smith Class of 2026 concludes their careers 52-51-4. The 52 wins for Allie Cimis, Fiona Gallagher, Kelly Howe and Seneca Urban are tied for the second most by a graduating class.
  • Cimis, Gallaher, Howe and Urban reached the semifinal of their conference tournament in each of their four seasons in Geneva.
  • Howe played in her 107th career game today, matching the program record for career games played. She played in all 107 games the Herons played from 2022-26. Howe tied Emily Martino '22. Howe finished her career 11th on William Smith's career goals list (20).  
  • Gallagher became the 14th Heron to play in 100 career games against Canton.
