Power & Patience: Hobart beats St. Lawrence 9-5

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team pounded out 10 hits and drew 10 walks on the way to a 9-5 Liberty League win over St. Lawrence at MCC's Tribune Field. The Statesmen eight their eighth straight to improve to 14-5 overall, 2-0 in league play. The Saints fell to 4-5, 0-2.

Junior Sean Garvin tripled twice, drove in three runs and drew a walk to lead the way. Senior Christian Petry and junior Jack Byrnes also produced two hits apiece, with both players contributing a single and a double. Senior Isaiah Pinto added a triple and two RBIs.

On the mound, senior Teck Nash matched his career-high with eight strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings. He kept the Saints' bats mostly under wraps, working around a two-run double in the second, until they got to him for three runs in the ninth. Junior Chris Lockwood came on in relief and got the final two outs on a strikeout and a ground out.

Petry led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Garvin's first triple gave Hobart a lead it never relinquished. Senior Will Jones then singled up the middle to score Garvin, and an error by the left fielder allowed Jones to come around to score, giving the Statesmen an early 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, St. Lawrence answered with two runs, cutting the lead to 3-2. Isaiah Pinto drew a walk and scored on a groundout, giving Hobart an insurance run.

The Statesmen kept the pressure on in the third inning. Pinto drove a pitch into the right center gap for a triple, bringing home first-year Jack O'Neil and junior Cole Conte. Byrnes then doubled down the left field line to score Pinto, pushing Hobart's lead to 7-2.

Hobart added another run in the fifth with Byrnes scoring on a groundout, making it 8-2.

Garvin continued his stellar day in the seventh inning with his second triple, bringing in sophomore Jack Farnen to make it 9-2.

The Statesmen were scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Saints, but a pregame delay pushed back the start of Game 1 by 90 minutes. Tribune Field doesn't have lights, so the second game was postponed.

Hobart's next game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 when the Statesmen host Oswego State.
