Cano posts hat trick at #2 Richmond

RICHMOND, Va.—The Hobart lacrosse team faced a tough opponent in second-ranked Richmond on Saturday, falling 24-8 at Robins Stadium.
 
Leading the Statesmen was sophomore Daniel Cano, who produced a game-high three goals. It was his second hat trick of the season. Sophomore Johnny Harding only took three shots in the game, but scored twice. Senior David Peterkin added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Brady Smith made his first start in goal and made six first half saves. Senior Elhanan Wilson played the second half, making eight stops.
 
Aidan O'Neil notched a game-high five points on two goals and three assists for the Spiders. Jack Ricciardi and Lucas Littlejohn each scored three goals for UR. Vincent Gaylord won 16-of-20 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high 11 ground balls. Connor Knight played just over 51 minutes in the Spiders' goal, making seven saves.
 
GAME RECAP
 
First Quarter
  • Richmond's Daniel Picart opened the scoring at 14:12, followed by Evan O'Neil, putting Richmond ahead early.
  • Cano responded at 13:27, but Richmond's Aidan O'Neil and Charlie Packard quickly extended the lead.
  • Cano struck again at 7:26, keeping the Statesmen close.
  • Gavin Creo and Ricciardi added to Spiders' lead, but Hobart first-year Slade Engstrom and Peterkin closed the gap, ending the quarter with Richmond up 8-4.
 
Second Quarter
  • Cano, assisted by Peterkin, made it three in a row for Hobart, cutting Richmond's lead to 8-5.
  • Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Richmond found another gear, scoring eight straight to take an 11-goal lead into the break.
 
Third Quarter
  • The third quarter was low-scoring with the Spiders sandwiching goals on either side of Harding's first goal.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Senior Connor DiTomasso opened the fourth quarter scoring and Harding closed it, but in between Richmond (9-0, 3-0) scored six straight to secure the victory.

The Statesmen (2-7, 0-2) look ahead to their next matchup against the University of Delaware on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. in Newark, Delaware.
