Game Recap: Hobart Baseball | | Ken DeBolt

Hobart Baseball sweeps doubleheader with Rochester

HENRIETTA, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team pounded out 25 hits and scored 24 runs during a doubleheader sweep of Rochester at the RIT Baseball Complex this afternoon. The Statesmen won Game 1 13-6 and took Game 2 by an 11-5 count.

Junior Connor O'Neil and senior Christian Petry each finished the day with four hits to lead the offense. All four of O'Neil's hits were doubles and he also drove in a team-high four runs. Petry scored a team-high four runs as did junior Jack Byrnes. Hobart's bullpen threw 7 2/3 innings on the day, allowing a mere four hits and just one earned run.

GAME 1 RECAP

Hobart set the tone in the first game with a six-run second inning. Sophomore Aidan Davenport walked to start the rally, advancing to third after walks to junior Connor O'Neil and a single by junior Cole Conte. First-year Quinn Dashefsky's sacrifice fly brought Davenport home, starting the scoring spree. Jack Byrnes walked to reload the bases and Christian Petry's walk added another run. First-year Jack O'Neil then singled to center, but the center fielder misplayed the ball and it rolled all the way to the wall, allowing everyone, including Jack O'Neil, to score for a 6-0 Hobart lead.

UR got two runs back in the third and three more in the fourth to cut the Statesmen lead to just one, but Hobart answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Petry doubled and later scored on Jack O'Neil's single, while Connor O'Neil's double drove in two more runs, extending the lead to 9-5.

Leading 9-6 in the eighth, Hobart padded its lead with four more runs. Sophomore Jack Farnen drew a bases-loaded walk, Davenport delivered a two-run double and Connor O'Neil doubled in a run to complete the day's scoring.

Chris Lockwood and Max Friedlander anchored the pitching effort, with Lockwood earning the win after 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits. Friedlander pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two and inducing a groundout.

GAME 2 RECAP

In the second game, Hobart put up another six-run inning, this time in the third. Jack Farnen singled to right to drive in two. Junior Sean Garvin followed with another RBI single to right. Connor O'Neil doubled to left to score Farnen and senior Isaiah Pinto singled to center to bring home Connor O'Neil and Garvin, giving the Statesmen a 6-1 lead.

Hobart exploded for five more runs in the sixth for a commanding 11-1 lead. O'Neil led off the inning with a double and scored on junior Connor Schmiedlin's triple. Pinto followed with a RBI single and he eventually scored on a wild pitch. Petry singled up the middle to bring home two more. Rochester scored four runs over the final three innings, including a three-run homer by Jake Bentivenga, but it was too little too late.

Senior Teck Nash delivered a solid performance, pitching 6 2/3 innings allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out six, improving his record to 4-1. Junior Charlie Forrest pitched the final 2 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
