KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The William Smith sailing team finished fourth out of 15 teams at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Fleet Race Championship this past weekend. In addition, HWS finished seventh at the Vietor Trophy in New London, Connecticut.
MAISA WOMENS FLEET RACE
- Saturday winds varied between 5 and 21 knots out of the north with an ebbing current for most of the day that kicked up sizable chop. Day 1 concluded with Cornell in first, Georgetown in second and HWS and ODU in a tie for third with 81 points each.
- Sunday started off with a seven-knot breeze out of the south with flat water and got up to the high teens by the time racing wrapped up.
- In total 14 races were completed in each division. Cornell claimed the conference championship, finishing first with 98 points.
- HWS placed fourth with 155 points.
- In B Division, sophomore Sabrina Starck served as skipper and sophomore Olivia Wilkins as crew. They finished third in two races and in the top 10 in all but one race. Starck and Wilkins had 80 points on the weekend.
- In A Division, sophomore Deana Fedulova served as skipper and juniors Maya Mahoney (races 1 and 6-8) and Ella Donaldson (races 2-5 and 9-14) as crew. They finished in first place in two races and in the top 10 in all the races. They were fourth with 75 points.
VIETOR TROPHY
- Saturday's breeze began with 8-15 knots in a northerly direction. As the day went on the directions ranged between NW-NNW-N and the breeze was between five to 15 knots. Eight races were completed in both divisions.
- On Sunday, the breeze began at five to eight knots out of the SW that built to 10-15 knots.
- HWS finished with a combined score of 233.
- In B Division, HWS was fifth with 84 points. Dante Garcia as skipper and junior Reilly Roedel as crew. They finished 1st in one race and finished in the top 10 in 12 races.
- In A Division, HWS was 14th. Jack Guinness compete as skipper and Bennett O'Keefe sailed as crew. They finished in the top 10 in five races.
UP NEXT
HWS will be back in action next weekend, April 4-5, when it competes at a pair of regattas. The coed team will be in Ithaca, New York, for the Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Coed Fleet Race Championship. William Smith will be in New Haven, Connecticut for the Yale Women's Team Race.
