Grottenthaler’s late goal sends #10 Herons past Continentals 10-9

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith junior midfielder Katie Grottenthaler scored the game-winning goal with 2:53 remaining in regulation as the 10th-ranked Herons knocked off Hamilton 10-9 in a non-conference contest at Urick Stadium this evening.
 
Grottenthaler and senior Taryn Luzi led the Herons, recording hat tricks in the win. Juniors Grace Rund (2g) and Mia Falco (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games. Junior Katey Connolly had a game-high six draw controls. Junior Janey Sypeck led the Herons' defensive effort, finishing the game with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Casey Fiore played all 60 minutes in goal as she improved to 2-0 on the season.
 
Sophia Wright (3g, 1a) and Maddigan Leifer (3g, 1a) finished with four points each for the Continentals. Leifer and Kristin Vosswinkel led Hamilton with three draw controls. Eliza Schwarz played all 60 minutes in goal. She had nine saves and notched a game-high five ground balls.

  • The Herons finished the game with a 26-16 advantage in shots, including a 15-8 edge in shots on goal.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • Falco opened the scoring for William Smith just over a minute into the game. She juked around a Hamilton defender and fired a shot into the back of the net. It was her third goal of the season.
  • The Continentals answered back, scoring the game's next three goals. Leifer scored two of the three tallies during the run. Wright had the third goal, converting on a feed from Leifer.
  • The Herons used a strong defensive effort and a seven-goal run to take a four-goal lead into the break. William Smith shutout the Continentals for nearly 25 minutes during the run.
  • Luzi kick-started the Herons' offense with a woman-up goal with 7:31 left in the first quarter. Her fifth goal of the season was assisted by first-year Cat Colvin. One minute later, Luzi struck again. Her sixth goal of the season was an unassisted tally. Rund closed out the first quarter, scoring her fourth goal of the season on a free-position shot with 52 seconds remaining in the frame.
  • Five minutes into the second quarter, Grottenthaler pocketed her first William Smith goal. Junior Kira Fulton scored eighteen seconds later. It was her second goal of the season. With just over nine minutes remaining in the half, Luzi completed her hat trick. The unassisted goal was her seventh of the season.
  • Twenty-seven seconds later, Rund scored her fifth goal of the year, burying a feed from Falco.
  • Grace MacLean broke up the William Smith run, scoring as time expired to end the first half. MacLean's second goal of the year was assisted by Lauren Garringer.
  • MacLean's tally started a four-goal run for Hamilton. MacLean 's third goal of the season came two minutes into the third quarter. It was assisted by Natalie Mascitti. Leifer and Wright scored the next two goals to make it 8-7 with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Grottenthaler's second goal of the game came with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter. It gave William Smith a 9-7 lead after 45 minutes.
  • Julia Lee and Wright notched goals early in the fourth quarter to tie the game 9-9 with 8:52 left in regulation. Lee's goal came on a woman-up opportunity and Wright's goal was on a free position attempt.
  • Grottenthaler won the game for the Herons with a woman-up goal. She collected a pass from behind the cage, dodged around a defender and fired a shot past Schwartz. It was her third goal of the game.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action Saturday, March 7, when it heads to Cortland. The Herons are scheduled to take on the Red Dragons at 4 p.m.
