#8 Herons trick Tigers 17-7

HENRIETTA, N.Y.—Three different players recorded a hat trick as the eighth-ranked William Smith Lacrosse team cruised to a 17-7 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League contest at Judson Stadium this afternoon.
 
Junior Mia Falco led the Herons' offense with five points on two goals and three assists. Fellow juniors Grace Rund (4g) and Katie Grottenthaler (3g, 1a) had four points each. First-year Cat Colvin added a hat trick. First-year Ally Orquiola had a team-high four draws. Senior Caitie Baker led the William Smith defense with four caused turnovers, and Colvin had a team-high four ground balls. Casey Fiore played all 60 minutes in goal and made six saves.
 
Eliza Barton led the Tigers with two goals and shared team-high honors with Alice Nichter with two caused turnovers. Milena Stephen won a game-high seven draws and Jocelyn Lee had three bound balls. Ellie Ruddy played all 60 minutes in goal for RIT and made eight saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, William Smith improves to 9-1 on the season with a 5-0 mark in conference play.
  • RIT falls to 8-3 on the year with a 2-3 mark in conference play.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Herons finished the game with a 39-20 advantage in shots, including a 22-11 edge in shots on goal.
  • The 20 shots and seven goals were the fewest in a game for the Tigers this season.
  • The Herons won the battle in the draw circle 14-12 and the ground ball battle 20-13.
  • William Smith was a perfect 16-for-16, clearing the ball, and the Tigers were 11-for-16 on their clear attempts.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Herons and Tigers traded goals to start the contest.  William Smith jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kira Fulton unassisted goal.
  • RIT tied the game 90 seconds later on a goal from Jennz Bovenzi. The woman-up goal was assisted by Julia Sodoma.
  • The Herons then scored four of the next five goals to take a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes. Rund's first goal of the game made it 2-1 William Smith at the 10:48 mark of the first quarter. Sodoma then scored to make it a 2-2 game.
  • Just over a minute later, Grottenthaler buried a feed from Falco to give William Smith the lead for good. Falco then cut from the back of the net and buried a woman-up goal thirty seconds later. Senior Taryn Luzi rounded out the scoring in the first quarter on an assist from Falco.
  • Senior Delaney Cassidy opened the second quarter, burying a feed from Falco to make it 6-2.
  • The Tigers briefly halted the William Smith run when Grace Validzic scored on a free position attempt.
  • The Herons put the game out of reach, scoring the game's next seven goals. Colvin scored the first two goals of the run. The first one was unassisted and just barely beat the shot clock. The second goal was set up by Luzi. Rund and Falco then scored unassisted goals, extending the lead to 10-3. Kira Fulton scored with 15 seconds left in the half on a free position shot.
  • Colvin completed her hat trick 49 seconds into the third quarter. The goal was set up by a pass from Grottenthaler. Rund completed her hat trick two minutes later.
  • RIT scored the only other goal of the third quarter when Eliza Barton bounced a shot past the William Smith goalie.
  • Luzi, Rund and Grottenthaler all scored in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Luzi and Rund's tallies were unassisted after they dodged around defenders. Grottenthaler's goal came on a free position attempt.
  • Grottenthaller completed her hat trick with 5:30 left in regulation.
  • Adele Jones, Eliza Barton and Emma Ripley had unassisted goals for RIT in the fourth quarter.
 
STREAKING
  • With a pair of goals today, Fulton extended her point streak to 24 games. She also has at least one point in 26 of her last 27 appearances.
  • Colvin has scored at least one goal in each of her first 10 games as a Heron.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, April 4, when the Herons return to the Flower City to take on the University of Rochester. Opening draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
