Schofield dominates faceoffs, but Minutemen clip Statesmen in 2OT

GENEVA, N.Y.—UMass first-year Thomas Bagnall scored with 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Minutemen to a 13-12 win over Hobart at Urick Stadium this afternoon.
 
Hobart senior Seamus Schofield dominated the faceoff X, winning 16-of-20 while collecting a game-high 14 ground balls. Senior Elhanan Wilson made 15 saves in goal. Senior David Peterkin led the offense with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. First-year Rufus Robertson added three points (2g, 1a). Sophomores Johnny Harding (1g, 1a) and Bryce Johnson (2a) and first-year Gordon Bennett (2g) each contributed two points.
 
The UMass offense centered on Bagnall and Dylan Johnson, who both recorded five points. Bagnall scored five times, while Johnson scored four and added an assist. Minuteman goalie Owen Salanger finished with 19 saves, including two in the second overtime.
 
GAME RECAP
 
FAST START
  • After honoring the program's seniors before the start of the game, the Statesmen came out fired up in the first quarter, racing out to an 8-1 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Peterkin and Bagnall traded goals to start the day's scoring.
  • Hobart seized the lead with back-to-back goals by sophomore Daniel Cano and Bennett less than a minute apart.
  • The Statesmen pulled away with a steady diet of make it, take it. Hobart would score and Schofield would win the faceoff to give the offense another shot.
  • Peterkin and Robertson both scored twice as the Statesmen built their seven-goal lead.
 
THE COMEBACK
  • UMass rallied in the second quarter, outscoring Hobart 5-2 to cut its deficit to 10-6 by halftime. Five different Minutemen scored during the frame.
  • The visitors continued to chip away at the Statesmen lead in the third quarter with a 4-1 scoring advantage. Bagnall scored twice as UMass crept to within one heading into the fourth quarter.
BACK-AND-FORTH FOURTH
  • The Minutemen tied the game at 11 with just under nine minutes left in regulation.
  • The Statesmen went back in front midway through the frame on a goal by first-year Slade Engstrom.
  • Johnson retied the game with 2:22 remaining.
  • Hobart was called for a slash with 1:03 left, but the Statesmen killed off the penalty. The Minutemen were 0-for-3 with the man advantage, including one 30-second stretch with a two-man advantage.
  • The Statesmen converted on two of their three man-up opportunities.
  • Both goalies made a save in the final minute of regulation to force OT.
 
FIRST OVERTIME
  • Hobart started overtime with a man-advantage, but UMass killed off the penalty.
  • Late in the frame, UMass got off two quality chances in the final minute, but Wilson saved one and the other rang off the crossbar.
 
SECOND OVERTIME
  • Schofield won the opening faceoff and went straight to goal, firing a shot on frame that Salanger turned away.
  • After a UMass clear, Hobart was called for holding, but killed off the penalty.
  • Salanger made his second saves of the OT on a behind the back shot by Harding, set up the Minutemen for the game winner.
  • Johnson earned his assist by drawing a double team with Bagnall trailing behind him on the crease. Wilson saw Bagnall uncovered and tried to intercept the pass, but it made it through and the first-year fired home the decider.
 
UP NEXT
  • Hobart (2-10, 0-5 A10) will conclude its season on Friday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at St. Bonaventure (4-9, 0-5).
  • UMass (10-4, 3-3) concludes the regular season vs. Penn on Friday. The neutral site game in Farmingdale, New York, is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
