GENEVA, N.Y.—The seventh-ranked William Smith lacrosse team knocked off Union 12-7 in a key Liberty League contest at Urick Stadium this evening. The victory was the 300th career win for Head Coach
Anne Phillips.
Phillips is the eighth active coach in NCAA Division III Women's lacrosse with 300 wins and is just the 20th in Division III history to reach the milestone. She has won 164 games in 11 seasons at William Smith.
Junior
Katie Grottenthaler led William Smith with four points on three goals and an assist. Fellow junior
Grace Rund also had a hat trick. Grottenthaler had a team-high four draw controls. Four Herons finished the game with two caused turnovers, including seniors
Delaney Cassidy and
Caitie Baker, sophomore
Maeve Barrins and junior
Janey Sypeck. Sophomore
Lauren Collins had a game-high six ground balls, and Baker was right behind her with four. Graduate student
Casey Fiore played 60 minutes in goal and made nine saves.
Lana Mickelson led the Garnet Chargers with three points on two goals and an assist. Gillian Joseph tacked on a hat trick. Hannah Compa won a game-high five draw controls while Mickelson had four. Claudia Patz paced Union's offense with three caused turnovers and Kate Loughney had four. Sydney Widlitz played all 60 minutes and made nine saves.

- With today's victory, William Smith is now 14-2 on the season. The Herons clinched the Liberty League regular season title and earned a first-round bye in the seven-team Liberty League tournament.
- The Garnet Chargers fall to 9-5 on the year and 8-1 in conference play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Herons finished the game with a 33-26 advantage in shots, including a 17-15 edge in shots on goal.
- William Smith had a 23-14 edge in ground balls. Union won the battle in the draw circle, 13-8.
- The Herons were 20-for-22 on their clear attempts. The Garnet Chargers were 14-for-20 clearing the ball.
FIRST QUARTER
- The first quarter was tightly contested with both teams recording eight shots in the frame.
- Grottenthaler opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game. Her 29th goal of the season came on a free-position shot.
- Mickelson tied the game thirty seconds later. She collected a pass from Schiller and ripped a shot past Fiore.
- Rund gave William Smith a 2-1 lead with 9:32 remaining in the opening frame. Her 27th goal of the season was an unassisted tally.
- The Garnet Chargers scored the next two goals to make it 3-2 with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter. Schiller and Joseph had unassisted tallies.
- Fulton tied the game with 42 seconds left in the stanza. Her 22nd goal of the season was assisted by Grottenthaler.
SECOND QUARTER
- Two minutes into the second quarter, Mickelson notched her second goal of the game. She collected a pass from Christina Guanci.
- Just over two minutes later, Grottenthaler fired home a woman-up goal. Her 30th tally of the season was unassisted.
- Caroline Luongo gave Union its final lead of the game with 8:40 remaining in the first half. The free-position goal made it 5-4 Garnet Chargers.
- William Smith scored the next six goals to take control of the game.
- Rund's 28th goal of the year came off a feed from Kira Fulton. The tally made it 5-5 with 2:50 left in the frame. Two minutes later, Mia Falco scored a free-position goal to make it 6-5 at the halftime break.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Herons scored all four goals in the third quarter to make it 10-5 after 45 minutes. Cassidy opened the quarter with her 16th goal of the season. It was an unassisted tally.
- Three minutes later, Cat Colvin scored a woman-up goal, converting on a feed from senior Taryn Luzi. Grottenthaler then completed her hat trick with 10 minutes remaining in the frame. It was an unassisted goal.
- Cassidy's second goal of the game came on a free-position attempt. It was a woman-up goal.
- William Smith outshot Union 10-1 in the stanza
FOURTH QUARTER
- Joseph scored the first two goals of the final frame. Her first goal was assisted by Guanci and Mickelson set up the second. The hat trick brought her season total to 39 goals.
- Rund and Colvin rounded out the scoring with unassisted goals.
- Union had an 11-5 edge in shots in the fourth quarter.
STREAKING
- Fulton extended her point streak to 30 games. She has at least one point in 34 of her last 35 games.
- Grottenthaler has had at least one point in all 15 games this season. Dating back to her time at Youngstown State, Grottenthaler has had at least a point in 33 straight games.

William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, April 18, when it heads to Sparks, Maryland, to take on Washington and Lee at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters. The opening draw is scheduled for Noon.
