Statesmen tripped up by #44 Brewers 4-3

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Hobart tennis team fell 4-3 in a thrilling Liberty League contest to No. 44 Vassar this afternoon in Bristol Field House. With the loss, the Statesmen fall to 8-8 on the season and 2-5 in conference play, while the Brewers improved to 13-5 overall and 6-0 in the Liberty League.

The thrilling conference matchup began in doubles play as Vassar won two of three matches to secure the crucial doubles point. Hobart's lone win came in the No. 1 spot as seniors Nick Fischer and Aidan Staunton defeated Fernando Bauermeister and Nolan Kubiak 6-1. With the win, the Statesmen duo improved to 11-5 on the season.

Junior Achilleas Kousaridis and first-year Everett Reid put up a fight in the No. 2 spot but ultimately fell 6-3 to Pedro Cattaruzzi and Junchen Jia helping Vassar secure the doubles point. With the loss, Kousaridis and Reid fell to 12-4 on the season.

The two sides continued to battle in singles play as the both the Statesmen and the Brewers won three matches each. Vassar secured the crucial conference win with its third singles victory of the afternoon. In the No. 1 position, Fischer earned his second win of the day as he defeated Eugeen Lee 6-1, 6-3. With the win, Fischer improved to 8-5 on the season.

Kousaridis added a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jia in the No. 4 spot. With the win, he is now 7-7 in dual match singles play this season. Hobart's final win came in the No. 6 spot as Reid rallied to defeat Shrey Choudhary 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, securing his fourth win of the season.

The Brewers clinched the victory in the No. 2 spot as Bauermeister defeated Staunton 6-3, 6-3. With the loss, Staunton falls to 8-6 on the season. First-year Tejus Ranadive also put up a fight in the No. 5 spot, but fell 6-0, 5-7, 6-7 (3-7) to Jonas Santos.

Hobart will be back in action Saturday, April 25, when it travels to Rochester for a crucial Liberty League matchup with RIT. First serve between the Statesmen and the Tigers is set for 1 p.m.
