HWS 5th at America Trophy

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team finished fifth at the America Trophy, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Fleet Race Championship, this past weekend, April 18-19. It was HWS' best finish at the regatta since placing third in 2022.
 
Saturday, on the St. Mary's River, 10 races in each division were completed in pristine conditions. On Sunday, there was a Northwesterly breeze that allowed the final four races in each division to be contested.
  
ABOUT THE REGATTA
  • In total, 14 races were completed in each division. UPenn won the regatta, finishing with 112 points, earning one of two automatic qualifying spots to the fleet race national championships.
  • HWS finished in 5th place with 187 points.
  • In A Division, senior Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones served as skipper and first-year Jamie McGuffee (races 1-10) and senior Cooper Delbridge (races 11-14) sailed as crew. They finished in the top 10 in 12 races, finishing in first place in the seventh race. They had 89 points.
  • In B Division, junior JJ Klempen sailed as skipper and junior Stella Kim (races 1-10, 14) and junior Elijah Goldman (races 11-13) sailed as crew. They finished in the top 10 in nine races, finishing first in the third race. They totaled 98 points on the weekend.
 
ALL-MAISA
  • Following the regatta, four HWS sailors earned All-MAISA recognition.
  • LaCerda Jones was tabbed first team open skipper while Klempen earned a spot on the second team.
  • Kim collected All-MAISA First Team Crew and senior Laura Therien was selected All-MAISA second team crew.
 
UP NEXT
HWS will be back in action on Thursday, April 23, when it heads to New Orleans for the ICSA Team Race National Championships.
