GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Athletics is 62nd out of 422 NCAA Division III schools in the latest Learfield Directors' Cup standings released on March 30. HWS moved up five spots from the final fall standings thanks to the postseason success of Hobart hockey and swimming and diving.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
Hobart hockey advanced to the national championship game for the fourth consecutive season, falling 2-1 in overtime in the title tilt. The runner-up finish earned 90 points in the standings.
Hobart swimming and diving earned points at the national championship meet on the talents of senior diver Daniel Barrientos. He finished seventh in the 3-meter competition and 20th on the 1-meter board. That put Hobart 42nd in the NCAA Championship standings, earning 22 points in Learfield Cup standings.
In the fall, HWS earned points thanks to strong seasons by William Smith volleyball and Hobart soccer. The Herons won their first NCAA tournament match in program history and finished 17th in the championship chase. The Statesmen captured the Liberty League regular season and tournament championships to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Hobart lost 1-0 in overtime in the first round of the national championship tournament.
With 187 points, HWS is third among Liberty League schools. Vassar is 57th with 194.5 points and Ithaca is 60th with 188.5 points.
NYU, which won the women's swimming and diving national championship, is first in the standings, 1.25 points ahead of second place Williams.
