Hobart and William Smith Athletics finished 48th out of more than 400 athletic departments across Division III in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings. HWS was the top ranked team in the Liberty League.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. Overall, 18 sports are counted in the final DIII standings, four of which must be men's and women's soccer and men's and women's basketball. The next highest (14 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.
HWS surged into the top 50 on the strength of three NCAA Championship appearances by spring sports.
The William Smith rowing team led the way with a third place finish in the national championship regatta on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia. The Herons, who won the Liberty League Championship, matched the program's best ever finish on the national stage (2002).
Hobart baseball, in just its fourth season since returning to varsity status, secured an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Producing a program record 32 wins this season, the Statesmen went 2-2 in the Salisbury Regional and were credited with a 17th place finish.
William Smith lacrosse also won a Liberty League Championship, securing an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Herons finished the year with a 17-3 record after falling in the second round. They were also credited with a 17th place finish.
HWS also earned points in the Learfield standings when Hobart soccer and William Smith volleyball competed in the NCAA tournament in the fall and Hobart hockey and Hobart swimming & diving made championship appearances in the winter. The Statesmen hockey team had the best finish of any of HWS' teams, going 30-1-0 and suffering their only loss in overtime in the national championship game.
HWS has finished in the top 100 of the Learfield standings in each of the past six editions of the ranking. This year marks the third time since the Directors' Cup was founded in 1995-96 that HWS has finished in the top 50 (2023-24 43rd, 2015-16 50th).
