Herons host annual William Smith Classic this weekend

The William Smith field hockey team is set to host the annual William Smith Classic this weekend, Sept. 12-13. Saturday's contests will see the Herons take on Ohio Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m., followed by St. Lawrence vs. Lebanon Valley at 2 p.m. Sunday's action will begin with the Saints taking on the Battling Bishops at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Herons and Flying Dutchmen at 2 p.m.

ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 2-1 record and is coming off a 2-1 overtime win against SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday night.
  • Junior Eliza Freeland and senior Leah Griffith lead the Herons with four points each; Freeland with two goals, and Griffith with one goal and two assists.
  • Juniors Mia Batchelder and Caroline Kogut follow with three points each. Both Batchelder and Kogut have one goal and one assist this season.
  • Kogut also leads William Smith with two defensive saves.
  • Sophomore Olivia Terranova has played the majority of minutes in goal for the Herons this season. She is 2-1 with a 2.17 goals against average and a .778 save percentage.
ABOUT THE BATTLING BISHOPS:
  • Ohio Wesleyan enters the tournament weekend 3-1 on the season after an 11-0 win at Transylvania on Wednesday.
  • Mary Powers leads the Battling Bishops with 11 points on four goals and two assists.
  • Annabel Fauver and Katie Conway anchor Ohio Wesleyan's backline and lead the team with two defensive saves each.
  • Payton Mindel has played the majority of the minutes in the Battling Bishops' goal with a 3-0 record, .667 save percentage, and a 1.62 GAA.
ABOUT THE FLYING DUTCHMEN:
  • Lebanon Valley is 2-0 on the season after a 3-0 win against Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday.
  • Claire Weidenhammer leads the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist.
  • Ella Weidenhammer is 2-0 in goal for the Flying Dutchmen. She has four saves and hasn't allowed a goal this season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES:
  • Saturday's game will be the third meeting between the Herons and the Battling Bishops. William Smith is undefeated against Ohio Wesleyan, including a 3-0 win in Geneva last season.
  • Sunday's game will be the 32nd meeting between the Herons and the Flying Dutchmen. The Herons hold an 18-13 edge in the series, including a 16-8 advantage in Geneva.
  • Last season, William Smith outlasted Lebanon Valley.  The Herons took a 2-1 win after knocking off the Flying Dutchmen 2-0 in a shootout on McCooey Field.
