NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—The 16th-ranked William Smith soccer team was edged by New Paltz 1-0 in a non-conference contest on South Turf Field this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fall to 4-2-0 on the year.
Senior
Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith. She made three saves.
Abby Macleod scored for the Hawks (4-2-0). Jess Centeri played all 90 minutes in goal and made nine saves to earn the shutout.
INSIDE BOX SCORE
- William Smith finished the game with a 19-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
- The Herons had five corner kicks in the game, and New Paltz had one.
FIRST HALF
- William Smith applied pressure on Hawks' defense early in the contest, but was unable to sneak one past the New Paltz goalie. Forty-five seconds into the game, Rachel Lee had a shot blocked by a defender.
- On the ensuing corner kick, Aleena Solano fired a shot just over the crossbar.
- In the third minute, Centeri made a diving save on a shot from Lea Bryant.
- The Hawks' first chance of the game came in the 26th minute. Alyssa Deutsch had a shot smothered by Goerke. Kara Jahrsdoerfer chipped the rebound over the crossbar.
- Cameron Hughes had one last chance in the opening 45 minutes. She one-timed a crossing pass on goal, but Centeri made the save.
SECOND HALF
- The Herons controlled the early portion of the second half. In the 47th minute, Lily Pryzwansky fired a shot off the crossbar.
- In the 56th minute, Grace Sudbay also hit the crossbar.
- Macleod broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Her shot from the top of the penalty box hit the crossbar and bounced down across the goal line.
- Lea Bryant nearly answered in the 82nd minute, but her attempt was stopped by Centeri.
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when it takes on Rochester. The non-conference contest is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
