BRISTOL, R.I.—The Hobart soccer team scored twice in the first half and never looked back as it knocked off Roger Williams 3-0 in a non-conference contest at Bayside Field this afternoon. With today's win, the Statesmen are 3-0-0 to start the year for the second straight season.
Sophomore
Tommy Broderick led the way for the Statesmen, scoring twice. Senior
Quinn Phillips had the other goal for Hobart. Junior
Jake Hans started in goal and made five saves in just over 85 minutes of work. Sophomore
Finn Connaughton made his collegiate debut, playing the final 4:24 of the contest.
Eliot Panaccione played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hawks (2-1-0). He made four saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- A tightly contested game, Hobart had a 12-9 edge in shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- Roger Williams had four corner kicks in the game and the Statesmen had three.
- Junior Griffin Coutts recorded an assist in today's game, extending his point streak to three games.
- The Hawks played the final 65 minutes of the game with 10 men after a red card was issued.
MATCH MOMENTS
- Hobart opened the scoring on the game's first shot. Phillips backheeled a shot past Panaccione for his first goal of the season. Junior Will Slayton and senior La Zai Outerbridge had assists on the goal.
- Slayton almost made it 2-0 in the 12th minute, but his shot was stopped by Panaccione.
- In the 17th minute, Hans made a pair of stops, robbing Aidan Jennings and Tyler Jastrab of scoring opportunities.
- Weldon Arner appeared to give Hobart a two-goal lead, but the goal was waved off due to an off-ball foul.
- Broderick gave the Statesmen a 2-0 lead, beating the halftime buzzer. He headed home a corner kick from Griffin Coutts for his second goal of the season.
- Broderick added a second goal in the 49th minute. He chipped a Daniel Scali through ball past Panaccione for his third goal of the year.
