Saints upend #25 Red Hawks in OT

GENEVA, N.Y.—First-year Sean Scott (Poly Prep CDS/Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored in the sixth minute of overtime to lift St. Lawrence over No. 25 Rensselaer, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Liberty League Men’s Soccer Tournament today. The Saints improve to 11-6-1, while the Red Hawks fall to 13-5-1.

Liberty League Rookie of the Year Brendan Gorman (St. Matthew/Ottawa, Ontario) set up the game-winner, sending a cross from the left wing through the penalty area near the six. Scott, streaking in from the right side, leaped in the air and knocked home his third goal of the year with his left heel.

Senior goalie Emilio Coletta (Marianapolis College/Montreal, Quebec) made three saves to earn the victory and his seventh shutout of the year. Sophomore Alex Penny (Northport/Northport, N.Y.) notched two stops for RPI.

St. Lawrence held a slim 9-8 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Saints will face Union in the Liberty League Championship match at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8. The Dutchmen tied top seeded Hobart 1-1 in double overtime and slipped into the title tilt with a 5-4 triumph in penalty kicks. Union and St. Lawrence tied 2-2 in double overtime during the regular season.
