The 1993 William Smith lacrosse team became just the third team in program history to reach the NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse championship game. The squad that rode a 14-game winning streak to the title game is the fifth Heron Team of Distinction.
The 1993 Herons started their season with a trip to Orlando, Fla. In its season opener, William Smith came out on top of Williams in a close 11-10 game. The next day, Middlebury edged the Herons 5-4. William Smith then returned to New York, and kicked off a 14-game win streak with a 16-3 rout of Hamilton. The Herons closed out the regular season with a perfect 6-0 mark at home.
William Smith, the NYSWCAA tournament top seed, faced Hartwick in the Herons’ first postseason game. Back in April the Herons had cruised to a 17-2 win over the Hawks, and their tournament game in May was not much different, as they posted a 21-10 win to advance to the championship. The title game proved to be more challenging. The Herons were down 14-13 to Ithaca with 51 seconds remaining. Amy Hoover ’95 scored twice, the first goal coming with 42 seconds on the clock, and the game-winner with just one second remaining to put William Smith on top 15-14, and earn the Herons’ third consecutive state crown.
In the first round of the NCAA tournament, William Smith defeated Rowan 18-9. The Herons faced Johns Hopkins in College Park, Md., in the semifinals, and dominated the Blue Jays securing a 20-9 victory. In the title game, William Smith met Trenton State for the second straight year. Hoover scored three goals in the game, two coming in the last five minutes, but Trenton state hung on for the win.
The postseason awards rained down on the Herons, including the National Defensive Player of the Year Beth Onderdonk ’93. The Heron lineup also included four All-Americans, Onderdonk, Hoover, Amy Alvord ’95, and Jennifer Bertsch ’95. Hoover set a Heron season record with 101 points, and goalie Sarah Daniels ’95 tied the mark for wins in a season.
Three members of the team have been inducted into the Heron Hall of Honor,
Bertsch (Class of 2007),
Hoover (2000), and
Head Coach Pat Genovese (1999).
