The 1988 William Smith lacrosse team was the program’s first team to advance to the national championship game and will become the third Heron Team of Distinction. William Smith posted a 15-3 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark at home. After starting the season with a 3-2 mark, the Herons rode a 12-game winning streak to the national title game, earning the program’s first NYSWCAA tournament title along the way. William Smith set a team record with its 15 wins, a mark that stood until 1994.

The Herons opened the NYSWCAA tournament with a 21-9 rout of Hamilton. Heather Dwinell ’90 registered a game-high six goals and Adair DeMarino ’88 added a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. In the championship game, William Smith secured a nail-biting 14-13 victory over St. Lawrence. The Herons rallied from an 8-6 halftime deficit, tying the game at 10-10, 12:36 into the second half, and then used a 4-2 run to close out the game. Dwinell scored five goals and added an assist, while Anne Jachney ’88 chipped in four goals and two helpers to lead the Herons to their first state championship.

In the NCAA tournament, the Herons met Drew in the first round and cruised to a 14-6 win. In the semifinals, William Smith tamed the Ursinus Bears 13-11. Susan Stuart ’89 backstopped the Heron defense, setting an NCAA Tournament record for saves in a game with 27. The Herons were edged in the championship game by Trenton State 14-11.

The 1988 Herons rewrote the William Smith lacrosse records book. Dwinell set the mark for goals in a season recording 73, while Michele Albert ’88 logged a season record 31 assists. Stuart’s 206 saves were also a season record. The team’s 288 goals, 143 assists, and 431 points were all season records.

The team boasted the National Coach of the Year, Pat Genovese, and the National Midfielder of the Year, Jachney, as well as All-Americans, Jachney, Karen Salemo ’88 and Albert.

Five members of the team have been inducted into the Heron Hall of Honor: Susan Stuart-Elliott ’89 (Class of 2007), Melissa Crowley ’91 (Class of 2003), Sarah Warriner ’88 (Class of 1997), Julie Perry ’90 (Class of 1997), and Head Coach Pat Genovese (Class of 1999).
