The 1992 William Smith lacrosse team is the fourth Heron Team of Distinction. The Herons posted a 15-0 record going into the 1992 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Tournament championship game. This team became just the second in program history to reach the milestone game, and also set a William Smith record for most consecutive wins. The stifling Heron defense allowed just 3.2 goals per game, while the offense outscored opponents an average of 9.3 goals per game.
The Herons won all 11 games in the regular season, defeating four nationally ranked opponents along the way. William Smith triumphed over No. 6 Middlebury 9-4, No. 8 Hartwick 16-3, No. 12 Cortland 9-4, and No. 13 Hamilton 6-2.
The No. 1 seed in the NYSWCAA tournament, the Herons cruised to a 15-4 win over fourth-seeded Hamilton. William Smith, led by four goals from Jennifer Munnelly ’93 and three goals and an assist from Joyce Cupaiuolo ’92, secured a 17-7 win over Hartwick for the title. It was the Herons’ second straight state championship and fourth in five years. Cupaiuolo was named the tournament’s most valuable player, and Munnelly, Mani Martin ’93, and Courtney Hutchinson ’92 joined her on the all-tournament team.
Making its fifth appearance in the NCAA tournament, William Smith faced the Hawks again just eight days later in the first round and advanced with a 16-2 rout. The Herons then took on Ursinus and earned an 11-4 victory to secure a spot in the championship game. Nunnelly registered three goals and two assists against the Bears and Amy Hoover ’95 added three goals and a helper, while Hutchinson stopped a season-high 15 shots in the victory. Despite rallying from a five-goal deficit to get within two, Trenton State edged William Smith 5-3 for the national title.
The National Goalie of the Year, Hutchinson sported a .732 and a 3.88 goals against average, both season records. Hoover tallied 33 a program-high assists. William Smith’s 15 wins also matched the record for most wins in a season. Head Coach Pat Genovese was honored as the Division III Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.
