William Smith rebounded from its 4-3 setback to Messiah to start the year with a 6-0 triumph at Geneseo. The Herons played their home opener against Division II Lock Haven and twice had to rally from two-goal deficits to force overtime. Lauren von Bereghy scored three times, including the game-tying goal while Sheila McKevitt scored twice, including the game winner. Just the second win of the season, the take down of the Bald Eagles was the 200th of Head Coach Sally Scatton’s career.

William Smith won the UCAA Championship with a perfect 7-0 mark. The Herons outscored their league foes 31-6, but that doesn’t mean the conference title was without drama. William Smith opened league play with a narrow 2-1 win at Vassar. Then, with the weight of the No. 1 ranking in the coaches’ poll and a 14-match winning streak, the Herons had to deal with a determined St. Lawrence squad.

William Smith had 27 penalty corners on the afternoon, but failed to convert a single one, until it mattered most. On its final corner of the afternoon, Nicky Livingston took the ball, dribbled around two defenders and beat the Saints’ goalie for the decisive score with 1:30 remaining on the game clock. Her eighth goal of the season didn’t end the drama. Livingston made a defensive save with 20 seconds remaining to preserve the lead.

After a first round bye in the NCAA tournament, the Herons knocked off New England College 3-0 in the second round, Cortland State 3-2 after double overtime and a round of penalty strokes in the quarterfinals, Salisbury State 3-1 in the semifinals, and Springfield 1-0 in the championship game.

Defender Jessica Dascano and goalie Marjie MacVean were named to the All-America first team while forwards Jackie Hall and Livingston earned second team All-America recognition. Dascano will be the first player from that team inducted into the Hall of Honor, joining Coach Scatton.
