On April 22, 2017, the 1987 lacrosse team was honored as a Hobart Team of Distinction. The Statesmen went 10-4 and captured the program's eighth consecutive NCAA Division III National Championship.

The season got off to a bumpy start as Hobart lost its season opener to Division I Virginia 11-9 and then dropped a 7-4 decision to Ohio Wesleyan in its Boswell debut. The Statesmen then rattled off four straight wins before falling to Division I rivals Syracuse 20-15 and Cornell 16-12. Hobart ended the regular season with three consecutive wins—knocking off Penn State, RIT and Hofstra—before extending its win streak to six games to return to the top of the Division III lacrosse world.

The Statesmen avenged their early season loss to the Battling Bishops with a 9-5 win the national championship game. After allowing an opening score, Tom Gravante ’88 notched back-to-back goals to give Hobart a 2-1 lead. The Statesmen extended their lead to 5-3 just before the break. An Ohio native, Shawn Trell ’89 made 17 saves on his way to earning the NCAA Most Outstanding Player Award.

Another future Hall of Famer Ray Gilliam ’87 won the 1987 Iroquois Nationals Award as the Player of the Year and won the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award as Attackman of the Year for the second straight year. Five players earned All-America honors: Gravante, Michael Guy, and Matt Torggler garnered first team honors, Dave Ralph took home second team honors and Shawn Trell was an honorable mention All-American.

As of 2017, the 1987 lacrosse team has five members in the Hobart Athletics Hall of fame Gravante (Class of 2006), Trell (Class of 2003), Gilliam (Class of 2000), Michael DeMaria (Class of 2008), and Head Coach Dave Urick (Class of 1990).
