The 1989 Statesmen lacrosse team was named Hobart’s 28th Team of Distinction by the Statesmen Athletic Association at halftime of the Hobart-Mount St. Mary’s game on Boswell Field on April 22, 2017. The team finished with year with a 15-4 overall record and earned Hobart’s 10th straight and 13th overall national championship.

The Statesmen opened the year with a loss to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Hobart rebounded with an eight-game win streak. It started when the Statesmen doubled up Guilford 10-5 and edged Ohio Wesleyan 8-7. Hobart then topped Alfred 13-9 and Washington (Md.) 10-6. The Statesmen earned a 16-9 win over St. Lawrence and downed Ithaca 13-2 before cruising to a 16-5 victory over Cortland on Boswell Field. Air Force came to Geneva and suffered a 17-2 loss at the hands of the Statesmen, but Syracuse ended Hobart’s hot streak with a 17-8 victory on Boswell Field. Hobart recovered with a 9-5 win over Nazareth, but was edged 11-9 by Penn State and then suffered a one-goal loss to Cornell 13-12. The Statesmen closed out the regular season with three straight wins. Hobart topped Hofstra 14-6 in Geneva, picked up a 14-6 win over RIT in Rochester and downed Ohio State on Boswell Field 24-8.
 
The Statesmen opened the postseason with a convincing 14-6 victory over No. 7 Cortland. Hobart earned its spot in the national championship game with a 14-10 win over No. 4 Nazareth. Then for the third year in a row, nine-time defending national champion Hobart met Ohio Wesleyan for the national title. The Statesmen fought for an 11-8 win over the Battling Bishops on Boswell Field. Lance Savage led the way with three goals for the Statesmen. Bill Miller added two goals and an assist. With the win, Hobart improved to 30-0 in NCAA Division III tournament games.
 
Eight Statesmen were named All-Americans. Michael DeMaria, Bill Miller, Eric Stein and Shawn Trell earned spots on the first team. Peter Bennett, Rob Cunningham, Matt Kerwick and Lance Savage garnered second team honors. Trell received the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Memorial Award as the most outstanding goalie in the nation for the second year in a row. He finished the year with an 8.45 GAA, a .564 save percentage and a 15-4 record in goal. Miller was presented with the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award as the national attackman of the year, after leading Hobart with 86 points on 55 goals and 31 assists. Stein was named the national player of the year.
 
Head Coach Dave Urick (Class of 1990) and Assistant Coach Marc Van Arsdale (2001), as well as, Bill Miller (1997), Eric Stein (2014), Shawn Trell (2003) and Michael DeMaria (2008) represent the 1989 Statesmen in the Hobart Athletics Hall of Fame.
