Professional bowler Heather Sterner was selected to serve as the head coach of William Smith bowling in the program's inaugural season. A collegiate All-American and member of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association since 2015, she is a native Rochesterian.
 
Sterner has posted her best performances in her hometown, finishing second in the 2015 Rochester USBC Queens Championship and third in the 2020 Rochester USBC Queens Championship. She has bowled two perfect games in her career.
 
Sterner led the Herons in their inaugural varsity season in 2022-23 to a 4-28 record. She guided William Smith to its first win on Feb. 4, defeating La Roche 657-649.
 
Sterner came to HWS after spending the past three years as the head strength and conditioning coach at SUNY Brockport. She was named the inaugural head coach of women’s bowling at Roberts Wesleyan College, helping the Redhawks go from five wins in their first season in 2016-17 to 21 victories in 2017-18.
 
Prior to making her head coaching debut at RWC, Sterner spent five years with Next Level Strength and Conditioning in Fairport. In addition to her work as a strength and conditioning coach, she also served as the director of public relations and office manager for Next Level.
 
Sterner's coaching career began at Central Missouri in 2011. During her two seasons in Warrensburg, she helped the Jennies to five tournament championships and back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances, finishing tied for fifth in the nation in 2013 and seventh in 2012. UCM bowlers earned six All-America awards in those two seasons. In addition to her coaching duties, Sterner also completed a strength and conditioning internship and taught Lifetime Wellness classes for the kinesiology department.
 
Sterner is a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise, a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA, and a licensed massage therapist. She also completed Precision Nutrition Level 1 certification. An entrepreneur, she started her own business, BowlFit in 2014, combining her passion for bowling and fitness. She has also owned and operated Restorative Bodywork.
 
Sterner graduated from Robert Morris University in Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in applied health studies. As a student-athlete, she served as a captain of the Eagles’ bowling team and earned NAIA first team All-America honors as a senior. She led Robert Morris to four consecutive NAIA National Championship appearances, finishing as high as third in 2010.

Sterner also holds a master’s degree in exercise science and kinesiology from the University of Central Missouri.
