Katie Lass joined the William Smith coaching staff prior to the start of the 2021 season. No stranger to the Herons, she spent the 2020-21 academic year working with the team as a goalkeeping consultant.

Lass has Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Certificates through USA Field Hockey and brings several years of coaching experience to the Herons. In addition to working with the William Smith goalkeepers, she has coached kids from grade school age to college.

Since 2016, Lass has worked for Ultimate Defender Goalkeeping Academy. A coach with WNY Field Hockey Club since 2017, she has mentored seven goalkeepers that have gone on to play in all three NCAA divisions. For the past three years, she has coached for USA Nexus, formerly USA Field Hockey's Futures program, helping identify and develop players for the U.S. National Team.

Lass began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant at SUNY Brockport. She helped the Golden Eagles to a 9-8 record in 2019, a five-game improvement over the previous season. In 2020, Lass began coaching with Empire United Field Hockey Club in Rochester.

A native of Cherry Hill, N.J., Lass was a four-time All-Empire 8 goalkeeper at Ithaca College. She was the 2013 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and the 2015 Empire 8 Player of the Year. Lass played in 67 career games, compiling a 39-28 record, a 1.64 GAA, a 0.82 save percentage and 17 shutouts. An NFHCA Senior All-Star Game participant, she played one year with the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team.

Lass majored in architectural studies with a minor in coaching, graduating with a bachelor's degree from Ithaca in 2017. She earned a master's degree in architecture from the University of Buffalo in 2020.
