Stangel joined the Hobart rowing coaching staff in August of 2021.
Stangel comes to Hobart after spending the summer with USRowing's Olympic Development program where he coached U20 high performance athletes that have the potential for selection to future US national teams. Prior to that, he spent a year as the head coach and director of rowing at Greenwich Country Day School, establishing the high school rowing program, including training plans, athlete development, safety and equipment plans, staffing and long-term planning.
Stangel has spent a majority of his coaching career at Syracuse University. He started as an interim assistant coach for the women's team, helping the Orange's third varsity eight finish second at the 2013 Big East Championships. In July of 2013, he crossed the hall and became assistant head coach for Syracuse's men's program. Stangel was promoted to associate head coach in July of 2017. With the Orange's men's team, he was the coach for the second varsity eight that finished seventh at the Eastern Sprints. Stangel also spent time coaching the third varsity eight. He was the team's recruiting coordinator, serving as the first point of contact for perspective athletes and their families. In 2018, Stangel's efforts helped Syracuse's top three boats finish in the top-10 at the IRA National Championships.
Stangel graduated from Syracuse in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in health and exercise science. He was a four-year member of the Orange's rowing team, serving as captain during his senior season. As a junior, Stangel helped guide Syracuse's varsity eight to a second-place finish in the petite final (eighth overall) at the IRA National Championships. He also helped the Orange win nine cup races in his final two seasons.
Stangel earned his master's degree in science and medicine of athletic performance from the University of Oxford in 2009. While in Oxford, England, he was a two-year member of the University Boat Club, serving as vice president in 2008-09. Stangel helped the club win the Visitors' Challenge Cup at the 2009 Henley Royal Regatta.
Stangel was a member of the US Senior National Team from 2010-12. He finished fourth in the coxed pair at the 2010 World Championships in New Zealand. At the Lucerne World Cup, he crossed the line ninth with the coxless four. The next summer, Stangel was ninth at the World Championships in Bled, Slovenia. In 2012, Stangel finished sixth at the 2012 World Rowing Championships in Plodiv, Bulgaria, in the men's coxed pair.
