Carl Michaelson '04

Carl Michaelson ’04 is entering his second season as assistant coach for the Statesmen. A 2004 graduate of Hobart, Michaelson was a four-year member of the hockey team. As the team captain his senior year, he guided the Statesmen to an ECAC West Championship and the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid.

Michaelson is co-founder and president of Westlake Hockey Development Inc. in Montreal, which consults with and develops elite level hockey players. The company helps players achieve their goals of competing at a range of levels, including prep school, junior, and university. Michaelson has extensive experience in strength and conditioning, and has instructed players on topics such as health and wellness, sports psychology, injury prevention, performance training, stride development, speed and agility, hockey skills training, and movement and performance analysis. He has also spent time coaching elite level hockey teams.

At Hobart, Michaelson, a defenseman, played in 74 career games, scoring seven goals and assisting on 14. His efforts on the ice earned him the 2004 Holden Award, a team award for character, sportsmanship, and leadership, and the 2004 William C. Stiles ’43 Memorial Award, presented to a senior student-athlete for leadership, determination, and character. Michaelson earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Before returning to Hobart, Michaelson played five years of professional hockey for five different teams in the United States, France, and Belgium.
