  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Cubbage joined the Hobart and William Smith tennis staff in March of 2020. He will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the Statesmen and Herons.

Cubbage is an experienced and innovative tennis teaching professional with over forty years of service on the court. Certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association in 1985, he has worked with hundreds of athletes at all levels of ability through club-based and private training. He has guided many of his students upward through the tournament ranks to college-level play, and onward to the professional tour. In 2014 Cubbage was named the USTA Mid-Atlantic Tennis Professional of the Year.

The developmental priority has deep roots in Cubbage's unique body of coaching experiences over the years. He is acclaimed for his pioneering work in the field of adaptive, recreation-based, programing for children and adults with developmental and/or senior care needs. As the owner and director of the Matilda Blue Adaptive Autism Tennis program, he has worked with students spanning the non-verbal/low-range to limited-verbal/mid-range of competencies. He has also designed and performed adaptive programing for residents of senior care facilities and for school-based programs for children with mental and emotional disorders. By bridging the game of tennis with the tenets of developmental functional neurology and recreation-based development, he has brought joy, confidence, and a sense of teamwork to a remarkable diversity of students.

Cubbage also served as the Athletic Director of 4Star Camps and was a Head Tennis Professional at the Elkridge Club. Both roles required him to create and coordinate programs for different tennis camps. Prior to his time at the Elkridge Club, Cubbage was the Director of Tennis at the Dayton Center Courts and the Hollinger Tennis Club, where he was the lead teacher for the Matilda Blue Adaptive Autism Tennis Program. He also organized and facilitated all junior and adult tennis instructional programs.

The result of this background is a broad range of sensibilities that Cubbage brings in a refined way to the court with advanced, college-level athletes. His goal is to provide them with the proven professional instruction and mentoring they deserve from a good coach.
