Harnen was appointed the interim head coach of William Smith golf for the spring 2024 season and will remain on the team's coaching staff as associate head coach for the 2024-25 season. She also serves as an assistant coach for William Smith hockey. 

Harnen earned a bachelor’s degree from Adrian College in exercise science. She holds a master’s degree in sports leadership with a concentration in collegiate athletics from Northeastern University. While at Northeastern, Harnen worked as a graduate assistant in the athletic business office and also spent a year working as an intern in the Harvard University ticket office.

In her first two seasons with the hockey team, Harnen helped the Herons to a 29-22-2 record, reaching the semifinals of the NEHC Tournament both years. After qualifying for the tournament as the No. 6 seed in 2023, the Herons skated to the No. 3 seed in 2024. She has helped mentor four All-NEHC selections as well as 21 NEHC All-Academic Team honorees.

Harnen came to Geneva after serving as an assistant coach for Curry College during its inaugural hockey season. The Colonels upset second-seeded Suffolk to reach the semifinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament in 2021-22. While in Milton, Massachusetts, Harnen assisted with the planning of practices, recruiting, supervision of study halls and coordinating team travel plans. She helped mentor one All-CCC selection and one CCC All-Academic selection.

Harnen also spent two years as an assistant coach for Northland College. She helped the LumberJills collect 14 wins while assisting in daily practice planning and implementing skill sessions throughout the season. Harnen helped mentor one All-NCHA pick and three All-WIAC selections. Seven players earned NCHA All-Academic honors under her guidance.

Harnen was a four-year member of Adrian’s American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I team. The Bulldogs improved from 11 wins in the 2012-13 season to 20 wins in the 2015-16 season.
