Phillips has served as the volunteer assistant coach for William Smith lacrosse since the start of the 2016 season.
In his first year, he helped the Herons to a 12-8 overall record and an 8-1 mark in the Liberty League. William Smith won the conference regular season and tournament titles and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Herons advanced to the second round.
In 2017, William Smith went a perfect 9-0 in the Liberty League and posted a 20-2 overall record, a program record for wins in a season. The Herons once again won the Liberty League regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA tournament. William Smith made it to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2003.
