Hobart and William Smith Colleges Athletics

Mike Abbott was named the Moses Family Associate Head Coach of Hobart Lacrosse in July of 2025. He joined the Statesmen following seven seasons at UPenn, including the past six seasons as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator.
 
With the Quakers, Abbott mentored eight All-Ivy League selections and seven USILA All-Americans, including 2022 USILA Midfielder of the Year Sam Handley. UPenn went 46-34 over the past seven years, winning the Ivy League Championship and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament in 2019 and 2022. Abbott’s 2019 offense was third in the nation in goals per game (14.94) and points per game (23.31) and eighth in shooting percentage (.322).
 
No stranger to lacrosse fans in Central New York, Abbott is a native of Syracuse and has also coached at Colgate and Cortland.
 
Abbott was a member of the Raiders’ staff for seven seasons, working with the 2012 Tewaaraton Award winner. His offenses ranked in the top 10 in the nation in scoring offense (2nd in 2012, 9th in 2018), extra-man offense (2nd in 2015, 3rd in 2012), shooting percentage (4th in 2015), and faceoff percentage (9th in 2018). Colgate finished atop the Patriot League standings twice and won the PL Tournament in 2015. The Raiders made two NCAA tournament appearances and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2015.
 
Abbott’s coaching career started with the Red Dragons. Across five seasons, he helped Cortland reach three consecutive national title games (2007-09), winning the Division III championship in 2009. Abbott worked with 29 All-Americans, four positional players of the year and one overall national player of the year.
 
Abbott was a two-time national champion as a player, winning a Division I title with Virginia in 2003 and a Division III championship at Cortland in 2006. He was a two-time All-American in two seasons with the Red Dragons, producing 114 points on 83 goals and 31 assists. Abbott graduated from Cortland with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology.
