A member of the athletics department staff since 2017, Tyler Wilkie has led the Hobart and William Smith cross country teams since 2021. He also serves as the NCAA compliance coordinator for Division III sports at HWS.
Under his leadership, the Herons and Statesmen have collectively earned 67 Liberty League All-Academic awards. Both were recognized as All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2021 and again in 2024. His runners have secured two USTFCCCA All-Region awards and two All-Liberty League awards.
In 2024, Wilkie led the Herons to a seventh place finish and the Statesmen to an eighth place finish at the Liberty League Championships. He also directed William Smith to its third-straight CCOC Championship title, while Hobart finished second at the CCOC Championships. Both teams also finished second at the Wildcat Classic Invitational, hosted by SUNY Poly.Â
Wilkie's first year as a head coach was an unconventional one. In 2020, he led the Herons through COVID-19 practice protocols and kept the squad moving toward its goals even though William Smith's fall racing schedule was canceled due to the pandemic. A year later, he guided William Smith to a second place finish at the CCOC Championships, a seventh place showing at the Liberty League Championships and a 12th place effort at the NCAA Niagara Regional Championships. In 2021, Wilkie also served as the interim head coach of Hobart cross country, helping the Statesmen to a runner-up finish at the CCOC Championships.
In 2019 as an assistant coach, Wilkie helped William Smith cross country win the Alfred Invitational, posting a perfect score with the first seven runners across the finish line. Additionally, the team was second at the SUNY Poly Short Course Invitational, the Cross Country Only Conference Championships and the Hamilton Short Course Tuneup. The Herons finished seventh at the Liberty League Championship.
As compliance coordinator, Wilkie oversees NCAA rules compliance for all of Hobart and William Smith's Division III teams. He educates student-athletes, coaches, staff, alums and boosters on NCAA regulations.
In 2017-18, Wilkie was the director of operations for Hobart basketball. That season, the Statesmen posted a 21-5 overall mark, the then program record for highest season winning percentage (.808). Hobart won a program-record 15 games in a row that season and captured the Liberty League regular season championship, going 16-2 in conference play. Hobart's coaches were voted the 2017-18 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.
A 2017 graduate of St. John Fisher, Wilkie competed in cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field for the Cardinals. A team captain in both indoor and outdoor track & field as a senior, he is a member of three relays that broke school records. During his undergraduate days, Wilkie gained a wealth of knowledge and experience through internships in the athletic departments at Hobart, St. John Fisher and Monroe Community College.
After earning his bachelor's degree in sports management, Wilkie earned a master's degree in sports administration from Canisius College.
