Originally constructed in 1974, Elliott Varsity House was renovated and expanded in 2010. The building houses the Abraham Sports Medicine Room, the Eden Team Room for Hobart football, the Genovese Team Room for William Smith lacrosse, the Miller Team Room for Hobart Squash, the Topichak Team Room for Hobart lacrosse, the Classes of 1955 Visiting Team Room, and the Robert C. Toner Equipment Room.
A special inductee into the Hobart Athletics Hall of Fame, William Elliott was a true supporter of Hobart and William Smith sports, and he established the Lewis Elliott Memorial Scholarship in 1965 in memory of his father, who was a member of the Hobart class of 1896. More than 80 Hobart and William Smith students have received the prestigious designation "Elliott Scholar," which recognizes financial need, stellar citizenship, diligence in academic pursuits, and commitment to athletics. Elliott's devotion to Hobart and William Smith stemmed largely from his friendships with Rod Ross and Jim Bampton. He served as a Trustee and Honorary Trustee of Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 1965-89 and received an LL.D. from Hobart and William Smith in 1964.
The Abraham Sports Medicine Room was made possible by a generous gift by Ed Froelich '65 and honors the dedication and service of Athletic Trainer Joseph N. Abraham. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and Hobart Athletics halls of fame, Abraham worked at the Colleges for 36 years. In addition to his work as an athletic trainer, he also served as a physical education instructor and as director of Hobart athletics.
The Eden Team Room was made possible by the generosity of Timothy S. '79 and Chesney S. Eden. The Genovese Team Room was named by former and current players and their families in honor of legendary Head Coach Pat Genovese, a member of the US Lacrosse National Hall of Fame and the Heron Hall of Honor. The Miller Team Room was made possible by the generous loyalty of Peter S. '86 and Barbara A. Miller. The Topichak Team Room was originally dedicated on Oct. 6, 2001, and was completely refurbished during the construction of the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The room honors the life of John Topichak, a member of the Hobart Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2001. He was a three-time lacrosse All-American for the Statesmen, while earning three letters in football and serving as a resident adviser.
All HWS team rooms in the Elliott Varsity House are equiped with handcrafted wood lockers and state-of-the-art technology for reviewing video and presentations as well as carpeting and heating and air conditioning.
The Toner Equipment Room features efficient and easy-to-use storage space for uniforms and equipment and laundry facilities. The room honors Bob Toner who has served as an equipment coordinator at HWS since the early '80s, while also offering guidance and support to generations of student-athletes. The dedication was made possible by the generosity of Eric J. Stein '89, Nancy Hedges Stein '86, and Joseph C. Stein III '86.
