Edward Froelich’s passion for Hobart athletics shines as vibrantly as any Statesman’s ever has. Froelich never scored a winning goal, made a game-saving tackle, or even suited up as a Hobart student-athlete, but his dedication and loyalty to his alma mater have contributed just as much to the rich tradition of Statesmen athletics.
Froelich’s commitment to Hobart athletics defines ‘Statesman’ and echoes the core values of Hobart College.
By his own admission, Froelich lacked the athletic ability to be competitive in all but intramural events. During his first year on campus, he served as a lacrosse team manager, a job he held until 1954. With plenty of team spirit to go around, Froelich also served as the football team manager through the fall of his senior year.
Froelich’s passion for the Statesmen was not limited to football and lacrosse. He enjoyed all things sports and served as a writer for the campus newspaper, The Herald. Froelich’s writing reflected his love of all things Statesmen and he served as the paper’s head sportswriter during his senior year. The Nov. 5, 1954, edition of The Herald contained the following prose under Froelich’s byline, “On the strength of a last-quarter rampage in which the Statesmen racked up 14 points, the undefeated Hobart football team trounced St. Lawrence...” Nearly 60 years later, his words can still bring fans to their feet.
A generous and loyal supporter of the Colleges, Froelich has endowed the Edward A. ’55 and Joanne I. Froelich Scholarship Fund and the Joe Abraham Prize. The Froelichs provided the funds that enabled the Colleges to renovate and endow the Abraham Sports Medicine Room; the visiting team locker room in Elliott Varsity House; and the new gatehouse at Boswell Field, named in their honor.
