GENEVA, N.Y.–Hobart College sophomore attackman
John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) posted an incredible nine-point performance in an equally impressive 13-9 come-from-behind win for the Statesmen over visiting Lehigh University this afternoon. Bogosian's two goals and seven assists is the highest single game point total by a Statesmen since Hobart moved to Division I in 1995 and the highest since Cabell Maddux '94 recorded nine points (5-4) in the semifinals of the 1994 NCAA Division III Tournament.
Bogosian leads the Statesmen in scoring with seven goals and 12 assists and assisted on Hobart's first three goals and five of its first six. He had a goal in the fourth quarter waived off because of an illegal procedure, narrowly missing a 10-point performance.
The afternoon didn't start off so rosy for the Statesmen (3-0, 3-0). Junior Christian Castellani (New Canaan, Conn.) scored twice in the opening 15 minutes to help the Mountain Hawks (1-5, 0-1) build a 3-2 lead. Castellani finished with two goals and an assist.
In the second quarter, things got worse for Hobart. Lehigh registered the first three goals of the frame before junior attackman Peter Cooke (Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville, N.Y.) notched his second goal of the season to stop the run at the 8:24 mark. Junior David Cohen (Port Washington, N.Y.) tallied twice more before halftime to help the Hawks to an 8-3 halftime lead. Cohen finished with two goals and an assist.
During halftime, storm clouds rolled in over the Colleges' new artificial turf stadium, a foreshadowing of what lay ahead for Lehigh.
Hobart registered three goals without allowing a tally in the third frame for the second straight game. Sophomores Adam Neary (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.), David Occhialini (Avon Old Farms/Cheshire, Conn.), and Brian Joy (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) did the damage to pull the Statesmen to within two, 8-6. Occhialini finished with a pair of goals, both in extra-man situations.
Hobart converted four of its 10 man-up opportunities. Flurries began to fall during the fourth quarter matching the flurry of goals the Statesmen scored in the final 15 minutes. Joy made it a one-goal game with his third tally of the contest and helped pull Hobart even at the 12:20 mark, setting up senior midfielder Jason Ouellet's (Avon Old Farms/Cheshire, Conn.) extra-man goal.
The man of the hour, Bogosian, put the Statesmen on top for the first time and for good at the 11:41 mark, finishing a breakaway goal set up by a heads-up pass by senior attackman Jamie Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.Y.).
Hobart outshot the Hawks 28-12 in the second half, and scored 10 unanswered goals before Lehigh added a meaningless extra-man goal–the team's first in eight tries on the afternoon–with 16 seconds remaining.
Sophomore Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) picked up the victory in the cage with 13 saves, while senior Russell Kushner (Setauket, N.Y.) made 17 stops for Lehigh.
Hobart returns to action on Sat., March 31, when the Statesmen travel to Bucknell for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
