Box Score Sophomore forward
Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) netted two goals to lead the fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team past No. 7 Johns Hopkins 3-1 today in the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. The Herons improve to 15-1-5 overall and advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round, while the Blue Jays end their season with an 18-1-4 mark.
All three of William Smith's goals came in a five minute flurry, and two were just 20 seconds apart. At the 11 minute, 49 second mark, Nasypany headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder
Rayza Santiago (Webster Scroeder/Webster, N.Y.) to give the Herons an early 1-0 lead.
William Smith extended its lead with two goals in the 18th minute. At 17:23, after another corner kick from Santiago, Nasypany found the loose ball after a scramble in front of the goal. Her shot from 9 yards out lofted over the John Hopkins defense and goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski, into the back left corner of the net for her 15th goal of the season.
A few seconds later, first-year forward
Kate Redmond (Bernard/Bernardsville, N.J.) gave William Smith its third goal of the day. Guszkowski came out to collect the ball, but it slipped out of her grip and Redmond was there to put the loose ball away. The Herons took a comfortable 3-0 advantage into halftime.
The Blue Jays got on the board in the 61st minute. Alison Smith took a shot, which William Smith first-year goalie
Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Succasunna, N.J.) dove on to make the save, but the ball got loose and Caitlin Moore was there to capitalize.
Davis picked up three stops in her ninth win of the season, while Guszkowski finished with six saves for Johns Hopkins. William Smith held a 13-7 advantage in total shots, and a 9-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
