Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.--Senior forward John Grazioli scored a career-high 32 points, but Clarkson made key free throws down the stretch to hold off Hobart 75-72 in Division III basketball action. The Liberty League's leading scorer connected on 12-of-20 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line, while also collecting a team-high eight rebounds.
First-year guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) and Rob Estep (West York/York, Pa.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Statesmen (10-12, 5-6).
Four Golden Knights (9-14, 7-5) hit double figures led by the 20-point efforts of Keith Murray and Brian Salanger. Salanger was 6-of-16 from behind the three-point arc. Brandon Linton's bid for a triple double came up just short as he finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, while Jonathan Hood also scored 10 points.
Hobart shot 47.2 percent from the floor and limited Clarkson to just 33.8, but the Golden Knights benefited from a 43-31 rebounding advantage. CU's Ryan Smith pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
Clarkson dominated the first half, leading by as many as 13, before a 16-6 flurry by Hobart whittled the Knights lead to 37-34 at halftime.
CU kept the Statesmen at arms length for the first six minutes of the second half, but a 10-1 run, fueled by three Grazioli baskets, put Hobart up 54-49 with 10:16 remaining.
Smith hit a layup at the 7:57 mark to put the home team back in front, 59-58, but senior forward Dan O'Grady (6 pts) answered with a layup to put the Statesmen up one for their final lead of the day.
Clarkson led by as many as five down the stretch, but Hobart made it a one-point game twice in the final 20 seconds. First-year guard Mark Bruce made the backend of a two-shot foul to make it 71-70. Murray hit two free throws fouled by a layup by Estep with five ticks remaining. Hobart immediately fouled, but Murray again made both freebies to seal the win.
The Statesmen are back in action on Feb. 19, when they host Hamilton at 8 p.m.
