Veltman breaks another record in Hobart win at Fairfield

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Hobart College senior attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Coquitlam, B.C.) broke the Statesmen Division I career points record in a 12-4 ECAC Lacrosse League win over Fairfield this afternoon. He notched three goals and an assist to raise his total to 146, three more than previous record-holder Nate Hill '05.

Senior attackman Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) added three points (1-2) to the winning effort, while junior attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.), senior midfielder Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.), and sophomore midfielder Doug Shiver (Delbarton/Morristown, N.J.) chipped in two-goal efforts. Senior midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) rounded out Hobart's scoring with a goal and an assist apiece.

The Statesmen defense shutout the Stags (3-4, 1-2) for more than 34 minutes, marking the first time Hobart has carried a shutout into the second half since blanking Lehigh for nearly 40 minutes on March 13, 2004.

Sophomore goalie Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) earned the win, stopping nine of the 11 shots he faced, while junior Brad Hester (Woodbridge/Woodbridge, Va.) turned back 4-of-6 in about six minutes of relief work.

Junior defenseman Ricky Evans (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) collected a career and game-high seven ground balls for Hobart (4-4, 1-2). As a team, the Statesmen picked up a season-high 46 GBs against 37 for Fairfield.

Seven minutes into the contest, Currie opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the year. Veltman followed with a natural hat trick spanning the first and second quarters, giving Hobart a 4-0 lead. Veltman has a team-high 13 goals this season, raising his career sum to 96, tied for 16th on the Statesmen's all-time list with Marc Van Arsdale '85. Overall, Veltman is 18th in career points, six behind No. 17 John Hayes '77.

Shiver closed out the first half scoring with 2:10 remaining. The Stags, who hit the post twice in the first 30 minutes, nearly cracked the scoring column at the end of the second quarter, but the shot found the cage after the final horn sounded.

Kirk, Shiver, Colburn, and Smalley scored in succession before the third quarter was four minutes old to put Hobart firmly in control.

Doug Kuring paced the Stags with two goals and an assist. Jeff Cilente went the distance in goal, making 10 saves.

The Statesmen are back in action on Sat., April 5, when they host Penn State in another ECAC matchup. The opening faceoff is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m.
